Arzana is a village in the Ogliastra region, at the heart of eastern Sardaigne, nestled between the wooded slopes of the Gennargentu and the wild gorges of the Flumineddu. At around 600 metres altitude, this agropastoral town preserves a strong Barbagia identity: traditional costumes, sheep farming, and a cork oak forest that shapes the landscape and local economy.

What to see

The village is best discovered on foot, wandering through granite lanes and low houses with sober facades. The parish church of San Giorgio Martire forms the architectural heart of the town. Around Arzana stretches the Montarbu state forest, one of Sardaigne's largest forests of holm oak and cork oak, crossed by marked hiking trails.

History and context

Arzana belongs to the historical Ogliastra region, long isolated by difficult terrain. This geography has preserved pastoral and linguistic traditions specific to the late Nuragic period and the medieval era. The territory was shaped by transhumance and cork exploitation, an activity still present today.

The highlights of your visit

Montarbu forest

This protected forest massif is home to centuries-old oak trees, natural springs and varied wildlife—Sardinian deer, wild boar, raptors. Several trails allow for half-day to full-day hikes depending on your level.

Flumineddu gorges

The Flumineddu canyon, accessible from around Arzana, offers a landscape of limestone and dense Mediterranean vegetation. The river carves out natural pools frequented in summer.

Festivals and costumes

During patron saint celebrations, locals wear traditional Ogliastran costumes, among the most colourful on the island. The San Giorgio festival brings the village together each year.

Photography tips

Morning light is ideal in Montarbu forest, before the mist clears. The village lanes offer good compositions in late afternoon, when low-angle light reveals the texture of the granite.
